Why? Neutron activation analysis (NAA) is a non-destructive analytical method commonly used to determine the identities and concentrations of elements within a variety of materials. Unlike many other analytical techniques, NAA is based on nuclear rather than electronic transitions. The proton determines the identity of an element. Each element has a unique atomic number, which is the number of protons in the nuclei of its atoms.
Atoms of a chemical element that differ only in neutron number are called isotopes. For example, carbon, with atomic number 6, has an abundant isotope carbon-12 with 6 neutrons and a rare isotope carbon-13 with 7 neutrons. Neutrons are the particles in an atom that have a neutral charge. They aren't positive like protons. They aren't negative like electrons.
